Imagine- A research and education center for the Great Lakes, based in Buffalo, New York -on the shores of Lake Erie and the Niagara River strait.
Our Time, Our Responsibility The WNY region is ideally situated as a place to create an institutional response to Great Lakes sustainability issues inclusive of the environment, society, and economy. The proposed Erie Niagara Marine Sanctuary is a perfect fit to help develop the concepts embraced by the Great Lakes Center for Sustainability. Other NOAA Marine Sanctuaries have stimulated the development of a wide variety of partnerships and initiatives focused on finding truly sustainable solutions to protecting and conserving the resources. Our project is designed to take advantage of the growing potential of a Marine Sanctuary based here. Communities based in the Buffalo Niagara region are positioned to demonstrate a leadership role for a sustainable economic and ecological approach to the next century of the international resource that is the Great Lakes.
One way to think of this is as a “Great Lakes Woods Hole Institute” with broad based fellowship, engagement, and development priorities.
We are evaluating the development of many initiatives including partnerships with educational institutions, private businesses, and individuals. We are working on science based research and development issues, media and community engagement issues, and have a focus on economic development that promotes conservation as a means to a thriving economy for our region.

Our principle reason for creating this project is that we know that there are have profound environmental issues surrounding the future and sustainability of the Great Lakes. It is simply our time for this region and our powerful human and institutional resources to take a leadership role in moving toward a truly sustainable Great Lakes for us and for future generations. This project is designed to address that opportunity.
Location The region is located on an international border with complex social and political issues and contexts that effect both the governance and the strategies linked to a sustainable future. Networking and engagement strategies are difficult. A resource such as a Marine Sanctuary could become a unifying force to stimulate engagement and bring critical attention to environmental needs and the growing and threatened resource of fresh water.
The concept Create opportunities for the incubation and implementation of projects and programs around substantive Great Lakes issues. These include but are not limited to science, research, education, business development, community engagement, and media. A Marine Sanctuary combined with the Great Lakes Center for Sustainability puts conservation and environment first. This approach and will open the door to a truly revolutionary approach to vibrant and thriving economic development opportunities. This project will help to promote a growing tourism/ecotoursim economy; focus on improving the quality of life of local and regional residents; and help to create the fundamental building blocks that characterize an attractive and inviting place to live, invest in, and engage for a future that works.
As a part of the Great Lakes Center for Sustainability we are launching an project initiative that we are calling The Great Lakes Research Institute for Sustainability. The Concept of the Great Lakes Research Institute for Sustainability (GLRIS) is designed to take advantage of the needs and opportunities represented by creating a collaborative “Woods Hole” type research and development Institute based on preserving fresh water, one of earths quickly vanishing precious resources. We can become regional and global leaders. If we build it, they will come.
The Great Lakes Center for Sustainability and its partners will continue to host discussions and projects focused on true sustainability issues in the areas of environment, society, and the economy, with the true bottom line being the environment.
